Nice to meet you
I'm Charlie Koch, and I've called Kansas City home my whole life. I grew up in a neighborhood where the pharmacist knew your name, the barber knew your family, and the bank manager knew your business plan before you did. That's the Kansas City I believe in — and it's the Kansas City I write about here on CharlieKoch.
Professionally, I serve as President of Bank Midwest. It's a role I take seriously and personally: in community banking, you're not just moving money, you're backing the people who make the place work. I've helped first-time buyers get the keys to homes in Brookside, watched a food truck in the Westport become a three-location restaurant, and sat across the desk from more than one nervous first-time founder with a folder full of dreams and a spreadsheet that barely balanced.
"A community bank isn't a building with a vault. It's a decision made by people who live where you live."
What I do
Leading Bank Midwest means working at the intersection of community banking and local economic growth. My days are spent with small business owners, community leaders, and the teams who keep our branches running smoothly. Outside the office, I spend as much time as I can walking KC's neighborhoods — because you can't understand a place from a spreadsheet.
Why this blog exists
Too much financial and business advice is written by people who've never signed the front of a paycheck, let alone the back of a loan application. I started CharlieKoch to do things differently:
- Plain language first. If a topic needs a dictionary, it needs a rewrite.
- Local lens. National trends are fine, but Kansas City is where I live and work — and it's where the story is.
- Honest numbers. I'd rather share one real figure than ten vague ones.
- Both sides of State Line. Kansas City is one metro with two states, and pretending otherwise misses half the story.
What you'll find here
Expect practical guides on community banking and small business finance, spotlights on KC's neighborhoods and the entrepreneurs shaping them, and the occasional friendly rant about why the barbecue scene is a serious economic indicator. Start with the latest posts, or jump straight to the story of why every KC small business needs a professional website.
When I'm not banking
You'll find me at a Royals game (yes, even in July), taking my kids to the Nelson-Atkins, or hunting down the best new taco stand in Johnson County. Kansas City rewards curiosity — and I intend to keep taking notes.
